If you’re a backpacker, you can shave pounds off your pack by replacing your tent with a Trek Light camping hammock. No matter what you do during the day, your campsite is your reward - the place you picked to unwind, have dinner, enjoy the stars, and sleep outdoors. Why deal with hard, uneven ground when you can relax, suspended in a hammock, looking up at the stars?
Our Eco Tote and Eco Shopper bags are not just for the grocery store. With the Eco Tote weighing in at just over an ounce, you've got the perfect reusable bag to bring with your for packing out your trash at the end of a trip without the need to use plastic. Expecting rain or going for a swim on your hike? Thanks to its quick dry, anti-mildew parachute nylon material, Trek Light Gear's reusable eco bags are the perfect solution for carrying wet clothes, towels or gear.
Since Trek Light Gear was founded by a backpacker, we know the importance of keeping your pack as light as possible and one of the ways to do that is to bring along items that have multiple uses. A Trek Light camping hammock is a piece of gear that does just that. If you’re backpacking in bear country, Trek Light camping hammocks can double as a bear pouch for hoisting your food and supplies out of a bear’s reach. Just wrap your food supplies in the hammock, pull both ends together and use a piece of cord or rope to hoist it up into the air like you would any bear pouch.
If you’re into ultralight backpacking, you can actually replace your tent with a hammock – it weighs less, is low impact, and can even be setup on the ground as a bivy shelter when there are no trees. Do you usually take along carabiners with you to clip items to your pack? Upgrade to our ultralight, backpacking carabiners and at the end of the day you can quickly use them to hang your hammock so you haven’t doubled up on any equipment. Trek Light portable camping hammocks can be used for everything from a picnic blanket to a makeshift stretcher if someone gets hurt on the trail.
Here’s a look at some of the benefits of adding a Trek Light portable camping hammock to your backpacking gear, your camping collection, or on any outdoor trip:
- Trek Light Gear's setup and ready for you to relax, cook your food, hang out by the fire, or close your eyes and sleep better than you ever have in a tent. Hammock camping is catching on rapidly as people realize that you can actually carry less weight and be more comfortable at the same time. Your legs will thank you on the hike back!
- You no longer need to search for smooth, flat ground, or spend your time clearing rocks and sticks that might poke a hole in your tent, or worse, in your back. It’s not just the sticks and stones you have to think about with a tent, you also have to find a level spot of ground that doesn’t slope up or down. Even the best lightweight sleeping pads on the market today can’t save your back from the toll that the ground will take on it. The ground is inconsequential when you sleep in a camping hammock – no matter what the ground cover or slope is, your hammock will be level, comfortable, and perfect every time. And even better, you wake up rested and rejuvenated, ready to take on the next leg of the journey.
- Not only do you avoid the search for a spot of ground to turn into your tent pad, you avoid turning an unsuspecting spot of ground into a tent pad! Sleeping in tents may seem like a perfectly harmless way to enjoy nature, but the truth is that tents actually pack the ground underneath them, which causes damage to the soil and can even prohibit native plants from growing where the tents have been. Notice that when you go to public campgrounds, you’re actually setting up your tent on a patch of soil or sand and not grass. If they hadn’t cleared out an area for the tents, you’d see dead patches in the grass wherever the tents had been setup over and over again. You may think this type of damage can only be done in a heavily traveled public campsite, but even in the backcountry sites of our national parks you’ll see very specific areas where people are camping over and over again. Wherever you go, tent campers are always looking for the same perfect patch of level, soft ground and overuse of the same patches of ground is almost inevitable.
Sleeping in a hammock gives the ground a rest and protects the land you’re enjoying by not flattening plants and packing the soil. Hammock camping is an environmentally friendly way to experience the outdoors and we’ve even found that camping under the stars in a camping hammock (as opposed to within the walls of a tent) tends to give people a greater sense of connection with the outdoors, the environment around them, and the camping experience in general. Anything that strengthens the spiritual bond that you feel with the outdoors will ultimately lead you to be more focused on your impact to it and Trek Light Gear is proud to encourage that connection with our products. Here at Trek Light, we support and promote the tenets of the Leave no Trace philosophy. Leave no Trace is an educational program to help people be aware of and minimize their impact on the environment. In addition to tips and tricks for respecting wildlife, coexisting with other travelers, and disposing of waste properly, leave no trace provides helpful reminders about how to stay on durable surfaces and how to avoid creating lasting effects on trails or sites. Trek Light Hammocks assist in this effort by eliminating the impact of tents altogether.
Wherever you go, camping, hiking, snowshoeing or backpacking, your hammock can come along to ensure that you have a comfortable, sturdy place to rest that is easy on the environment.
"My philosophy is to both work hard and play hard. I like to schedule strenuous hikes into my trips, with a killer destination at the end, and I always throw my Trek Light portable hammock in my day pack. Instead of getting to the end of our hike and trying to find a decent seat on jagged rocks, my hiking friends and I set up Trek Light camping hammocks, slip into the soft, silky material, and enjoy the scenery while giving our legs a break. All I have to do is find two trees, loop the ‘Go Anywhere’ ropes around them, and hook in my hammock, I’m still amazed at how easy it is. I highly recommend the lightweight carabiners too, they saved weight from my pack and I use them for a million things when I’m not using the hammock …. After we’ve taken in the scenery and had our fill of trail mix, we stuff the hammocks into their pouches and head back to camp. At the end of the day, I even set it up around the campfire and have the best seat in the house. It’s a true camping hammock – a lightweight luxury for every part of my trip!"
