The Mountain Stands is an absolutely beautiful children's book about certainty in uncertain times.
The story expresses our ability to connect with nature over time - as things happen in our world that we can't control, the Mountain still stands.
Each page is illustrated in a wonderfully layered collage style - using textures, sketches, and photographs to bring to life the intricate-yet-simple beauty of the outdoors.
We're all facing lots of unknowns these days, and The Mountain Stands provides a guiding comfort and a sense of perspective.
Amy and I wrote this together on our trips back home from the mountains and it is based on the places and animals that we have seen with our kids while traveling to our national parks.
At each park, I drew in my sketchbook what we saw: Birds, Fish, Mammals, Bugs. I took photographs of the textures I saw: Rocks, Trees, Leaves, Grasses. And then I printed those textures on colored papers using a special printer called a Risograph.
With my piles of papers and some old outdoor magazines. I used collage to make the illustrations in the book. So each illustration is up-cycled from old magazines and catalogs and features fun one-of-a-kind textures from nature.
The book also features a how-to on how to make your own pictures using this technique at home.
The book is written using repetitive words and phrases which allow children to participate in the reading experience immediately. Guessing the ending words in the book with a consistent rhythm can help your young reader build solid foundational literacy skills.
Our book was designed with kids and reading with kids in mind. It's big enough to see our vibrant full-color illustrations in your lap or as you read to a group but small enough to accommodate small hands.
- 8 x 10 x .5 in
- 32 full-color pages

They even designed the National Park Typeface.
Amy Shellhorn is a former elementary classroom teacher who currently works as Parent Involvement Facilitator at Schwegler Elementary School. She loves hiking and is what they call a "lake chaser" trying to see as many alpine lakes as she can, sometimes sitting still on the shore, reading, journaling while Jeremy fishes. At school Amy loves to get books in the hands of kids and families, she helps parents connect to educational resources that give them the skills to foster a love of reading and literacy in their children's lives.
For every item sold, we work with Trees For The Future to plant a tree in your honor.
Why is that so powerful? By helping small farmers and villages around the world with the planting of fruit & vegetable trees, shade trees and more, together we're going beyond basic environmental change.
Trees For The Future uses a Forest Garden approach to reforestation - planting trees to not only provide environmental benefits, but also food, income, and community agriculture where it's needed most.
Every purchase creates a chain reaction of good and happiness in the world, and it all starts with you.
Our warehouse is continuing to take all necessary measures to ship orders and keep our team safe. Life may feel like it's returning to normal in your local area (we hope!), but the impact of COVID is still extremely present in the world of shipping and fulfillment.
Most orders for in-stock items are leaving our warehouse within 1-3 business days, but please be understanding if it takes additional time to get your order shipped.
If you choose an express shipping rate (FedEx Overnight or FedEx 2-Day) we're still getting most expedited orders out the door within one business day from when you order.
Please note that even though FedEx Ground or Priority Mail may cost more than Standard/Free Shipping, they're not considered an expedited shipping method. Any delivery times quoted are estimates only and it may not ship for 1-3 business days after you order as noted above.
Bottom line: We're doing everything we can to get your order to you quickly and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time!
Our shipping takes place Monday through Friday - any orders placed over the weekend or after our daily mail pickup will be shipped in the order received.
If you choose a shipping option that has a quoted time like "FedEx Ground (2 Business Days)" or even "FedEx Overnight (1 Day)", please remember that isn't a guarantee that the order will be there exactly 1 or 2 days from the moment you order it - we still need time to pack & ship your order (see above).
When it comes to the carriers, the quoted times should also always be thought of as estimates, not guarantees. Expedited methods like FedEx 2-Day or Overnight are pretty reliable in their delivery times (hence the cost), but services like Ground/Priority can certainly be optimistic with their estimates.
We offer the ability to pre-order and backorder some items on our site when they are not yet in stock. If an item you are purchasing isn't currently in stock, you'll see a note displayed in your shopping cart that indicates the expected shipping time for your order.
Please note that the expected shipping time is an estimate based on when we expect to receive new inventory.
Sometimes it takes us even longer than expected to receive inventory (especially with unpredictable COVID delays) and sometimes we receive inventory much sooner than the timeframe we estimate. Your order will always ship as soon as the inventory is in our hands!
We aren't able to split-ship your orders into multiple deliveries - so if you are ordering an item that isn't currently in stock along with other items that are, please be aware that your order won't ship until all items are in stock. If you're anxious to receive the in-stock items, we recommend placing a separate order so you can receive the in-stock items without delay.
Please see our Can I Request A Specific Shipping Carrier? page with important details on which carriers we offer and how to make sure you get your package delivered properly.
When receiving an international order your package will need to pass through Customs in your country. All of our packages will have a Customs Declaration Form which details the items in your package and their value.
PLEASE NOTE: There are almost always additional charges to receive your package when you order from outside your own country - these charges are Customs Duties and Import Taxes which are your responsibility to pay (often before you are allowed to collect the package). The laws and taxes are different in every country and Trek Light Gear has no way of knowing in advance what these taxes and fees will be. Please be aware of this when placing your order, we don't want you to be surprised when the package shows up and you owe additional money!
If you have any additional questions about international shipping methods or rates just let us know!
