A number of articles started springing up online this week regarding everyone’s favorite P.I. and guess what, hammocks. The title of the post caught my attention immediately “Tom Selleck Hates Signing ‘Magnum, P.I.’ Poster Featuring Him In A Hammock” (you can read the original article here).
It turns out the autograph request Tom Selleck gets more than any other is to sign a picture of him lounging in a hammock and drinking from a pineapple. While that doesn’t sound so bad on the surface, Tom wasn’t happy about the photo shoot at the time and he’s still not happy about it:
“They put me in a hammock between two palm trees and I had on a purple Hawaiian shirt… and they gave me one of those pineapples that are cut off with a big straw and an umbrella.
“I said, ‘I don’t wanna do this’, and they said, ‘Oh, come on, just be a good sport’.
“Now, everywhere I go, that poster comes up or that picture comes up and I have to sign it.”
For the curious, here’s the photo Tom’s referring to (I couldn’t find any info on the photo rights so if anyone has an objection to posting it here just let me know and I’ll take it down immediately):
I can’t help but think ol’ Magnum would feel a whole lot cooler if he was in a Trek Light Hammock instead, which would have allowed him to stage the photo shoot at the top of a mountain with, let’s say a pet cougar and a yeti, instead of a flowering pineapple.
Tom, let’s erase your bad hammock memories and get you into a hammock that better suits your style, it’s on me.
P.S. If you happen to like the picture of Relaxing Magnum so much you simply have to own a copy, turns out you can buy it here for only $5. Just don’t ask Tom to sign it.
