June 25th is Colorado Bike to Work Day

Monday, June 23 2008 18:22 by Seth

Bike to WorkOn Wednesday, June 25, thousands of people will leave their cars at home and take two wheels to work.

The League of American Bicyclists has been sponsoring National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day since 1956. Throughout most of the country, these events take place in May, but a few years ago, the state legislature officially declared June as Colorado Bike Month, with the fourth Wednesday of the month being Bike to Work Day.

There will be breakfast stations setup all over the Boulder and Denver metro areas serving up delicious morning treats, so even if you have to leave your house extra early to get to work on time you’ll still be able to squeeze in a good breakfast to start your day.   If you live in Colorado, get that bike out on Wednesday and take part in a great event.   If you don’t live in Colorado, help us celebrate anyways by biking, walking or taking public transportation to work on Wednesday!

Best Buy Testing Free e-Waste Recycling Program

Friday, June 6 2008 11:28 by Seth

A very encouraging development from Best Buy:

Under pressure to help dispose some of the electronic waste it helped create, Best Buy Co. is testing a free program that will offer consumers a convenient way to ensure millions of obsolescent TVs, old computers and other unwanted gadgets don’t poison the nation’s dumps.

(Via Best Buy testing free e-waste recycling program - Going Green- msnbc.com)

I’m always amazed at how difficult it still seems to be to do simple ‘green’ things like recycle or properly dispose of your waste.   You know you’re not supposed to throw your electronics in with the regular trash, but you can’t put them in your recycling bin either, so what do you do?   Currently, you have to contact a group like Colorado’s own Eco-Cycle and find a local recycling center where you can drop it off and also pay a fee while you’re at it.  Or, depending on the manufacturer of your equipment you can sometimes return it straight to them.    Dell has implemented a great, free, recycling program for their branded equipment and, if you purchase new equipment from them, they’ll even offer to recycle your old PC and monitor for free as well.  The only problem is, Dell is out in front in a lot of ways and there are just as many major manufacturers that either don’t make it easy for you to recycle their equipment or they charge you a fee for doing so.

International Cleanup Weekend!

Thursday, October 4 2007 23:36 by Seth

bouldercleanup On October 13th and 14th Google is organizing an International Cleanup Weekend. The formula is a simple one:

1.) Organize small, independent cleanup efforts over a two-day period

2.) Encourage communities to bond together to restore areas that are important to them

3.) Use the social power of Google Maps to specify areas, organize teams, and provide instructions for anyone that wants to help out

4.) Repeat all over the globe

Celebrate Earth Day

Friday, April 20 2007 23:25 by Seth

This Sunday, April 22nd, is Earth Day

Regardless of whether Earth Day is a big event in your life or something that you just like to acknowledge (perhaps with a half-serious "Happy Earth Day!" to a friend), we'd like to remind you to take a moment and try to think of just one thing that you can do on Sunday to really honor Earth Day. You can plant a tree in your yard, pick up trash in your neighborhood or donate some money to your favorite environmental charity. You don't have to attend a parade or wear a 'Save the Polar Bears' t-shirt - if you can just do one simple thing to honor the Earth on Sunday you'll play a vital role in making our planet a better place.

And if you need a rest after planting that tree or cleaning up your local park, go ahead and kick back in a Trek Light Hammock and enjoy yourself...you deserve it.

Happy Earth Day (seriously),
Trek Light Hammocks

Think Green!

Friday, March 16 2007 23:22 by Seth

This St. Patrick's Day, when you find yourself surrounded by green everywhere you turn and your thoughts are filled with images of parades, corned beef and cabbage and green beer, I'd like to invite you think about some of the other ways you can incorporate green into your life all year long. Whether it's living a green lifestyle or just spending more time getting outside and surrounding yourself with nature's own green parade, you truly can never have enough green in your life....

    • Plant a garden this year and grow your own veggies and herbs: You'll be amazed at how good they taste and how much more likely you are to use them in your cooking when they're always available

    • Plan a picnic: Whether you have a romantic dinner picnic after work with a sunset and some wine or you wait until the weekend and do lunch, a picnic is a great excuse to get away from your kitchen table and eat dinner with a view you won't have to pay extra for.
